The Holsten brewery was founded in 1879 in the city of Hamburg. The brewery takes its name from the "Holsten" tribe which once lived in the Northern German region now known as Holstein. The Holsten people have been described as freedom-loving, bull-headed and very hospitable, and it may be that these were characteristics which inspired the Holsten brewery's founders.
Holsten's beer is classified as authentic German beer as described by the German beer Purity Laws. Their beer can be found around the world.
