Angostura bitters was perfected as a remedy for stomach complaints by Dr Johann G. B. Siegert. He used plant extracts in created these bitters and named it after the Venezuelan town of Angostura on the Orinoco River. Word of this medicine reached the British Navy, who added it not only to their medicine kit, but also to their Plymouth gin rations. Hence "Pink Gin" acquired its name. Some prefer to drink with a splash of water, and other like it straight.
