Dating back to 1874, Sutter Home is one of the largest independent wineries in the United States. It was founded by John Thomann in California's Napa County but, like most wineries, closed due to prohibition. It was re-opened in 1948 by the Trinchero brothers from New York, bringing their family's knowledge of the Italian wine business.
Sutter Home are noted for the creation of White Zinfandel wine. A fortuitous incident of the 1975 vintage of their red Zinfandel caused it to fail to ferment completely and the wine was set aside. Upon tasting it some time later, it had become a sweet pink wine that they bottled as White Zinfandel, today a world-famous and much-loved varietal.
