Description:

This might look like a simple bit of barware, but it’s actually part of one of the most iconic drinking rituals out there. An absinthe spoon is designed specifically for preparing absinthe the traditional way - not just for stirring. It’s a flat, slotted (or perforated) spoon that sits across the top of your glass. You place a sugar cube on it, then slowly drip cold water over the sugar. As the water dissolves the sugar, it mixes into the absinthe below, softening the strong, bitter flavour and creating that cloudy "louche" effect.

The design isn’t random either - those holes or slots let the sugar melt evenly into the drink, while the notched handle keeps the spoon balanced on the glass. Historically, these spoons became popular in the late 1800s when absinthe was huge in France, and they were often branded or shaped in decorative ways - some even as souvenirs or collectibles. These days, they’re still used for the full ritual, but they’re also just a nice touch if you want the proper absinthe experience rather than just mixing it quickly.
