Ardbeg Wee Beastie has been matured for just 5 years. If age can tame most whiskies to give smoothness and balance, then this one certainly comes untamed. It is indeed a 'Wee Beastie' when it come to smokiness, that some whisky fans love!
A whisky that invites curiosity and promise of a monstrously smoky experience. On tasting, the whisky is not just incredibly smoky, but also has some balance from the use of sherry cask maturation.
On the nose, it's very fresh, herbal, with hints of vanilla, pear, freshly cracked black pepper and honey-glazed ham. This is followed by rich Turkish coffee and sappy pine resin. The addition of water, produces more herbal notes like fennel, along with aniseed, green apple and leather. A rich, explosive mouthfeel with lots of chocolate, tar and smoked bacon. This is then followed by a burst of antiseptic lozenges, eucalyptus and more aniseed. The finish is long, salty and mouthcoating, with hints of cocoa, fudge and savoury meats.
