Glenmorangie Malaga Cask Finish 12 Year Old Single Malt Whisky is the first edition in the Barrel Select Releases. A sweet, rich whisky, that's honeyed in style and gently spiced, it is finished in casks which once held one of the world’s rarest fortified wines. The single malt’s fruity and fragrant spirit was first distilled on Monday, 18th February 2008. The whisky first spent eight years ageing in hand-picked American oak bourbon casks, gaining mellow, citrus notes. A parcel of historic Malaga wine casks, from southern Spain were then chosen to age the whisky for a further four years. These casks are so rare, they once faced extinction.
The intention was to enrich Glenmorangie in Malaga wine casks that produce a ‘dulce’ (sweet) style. Sourcing a tiny handful of these casks, the idea was to infuse sweet and syrupy tastes. This single malt threads citrus vibrancy with brown sugar, raisins and honey. It brings a new richness to Glenmorangie's soft and creamy style.
Glenmorangie Malaga Cask Finish 12 Year Old has sweet, rich scents of honey, mead, toffee and baking bread that intertwine with aromatic tea leaves. Then comes subtle, perfumed notes of stewed herbs and red fruits, followed by hints of milk chocolate. A splash of water releases wood incense, roasting chestnuts and muscovado sugar. The rich, oily texture brings sultanas, raisins and dates bursting on to the palate. Mandarin orange, milk chocolate, honey and more brown sugar come forth, woven in with vibrant citrus. This is followed by cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and star anise. Hazelnut, honey and gentle oak then shine through in a long, mellow finish.
