Description

Description:

Glenmorangie Spios is the ninth release from the award-winning Private Edition range. Spios, pronounced 'spee-oss' is Scots Gaelic for 'spice'. It's the first ever single malt to be entirely matured in casks which once contained American rye whiskey. Taking inspiration from the glamorous past of American rye whiskey, this limited edition seeks to delight connoisseurs and collectors alike, with its savoury elegance and subtle spicy notes. Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie's Master Distiller and Director of Whisky Creation, drew his inspiration for Spios from trips to the Kentucky distilleries producing rye whiskey in the 1990s. He loved the spicy character of the rye whiskey and felt the ex-rye casks would complement Glenmorangie's spirit perfectly. For the whisky Lumsden had in mind, a full maturation in ex-rye casks was required. It would take over 18 months to source the finest first fill casks from Kentucky, each hand-selected before shipping to the Glenmorangie distillery to be filled with new-make spirit. Only years later would the whisky emerge, as full-bodied and spicy as Lumsden had envisioned all those years earlier. On the nose it is fresh and herbal, bringing notes of cherry, clove, mint toffee and green grass. A few drops of water brings out more perfumed aromas. On the palate, the spiciness of the rye is readily apparent, with flavours of cinnamon, clove, toffee, nutmeg and buttery vanilla. A sweet and lingering finish brings forth just a suggestion of citrus.

This is another exclusive and limited release in the Glenmorangie Private Edition series. Limited stocks.
