Produced in Cognac by Hennessy, this expression is one of the earliest examples of the "Extra Old" category, originally created in 1870. It is built from a broad selection of eaux-de-vie, many aged for extended periods in French oak, giving the blend a layered, evolving character rather than a single dominant note.
The structure is driven by long cask maturation, where interaction with oak introduces spice, tannin, and a gradual concentration of flavour. What sets XO apart is not just age, but the interplay between older, more intense components and slightly younger eaux-de-vie that retain brightness. In large format, the presentation becomes part of the experience - suited to display and shared service - while the liquid itself remains unchanged. Rather than immediate fruitiness, the profile leans toward depth and progression in the glass, opening gradually with time and air. It is typically approached slowly, allowing the different layers to unfold rather than presenting everything upfront.
