Description

Description:

This is one of the most historic and iconic sweet wines in the world. Produced at Klein Constantia in South Africa, its origins date back to the late 17th century, when Constantia wines were sought after by European royalty and figures such as Napoleon, Jane Austen, and Charles Dickens. The wine is made from Muscat de Frontignan (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains), grown on the original Constantia estate. Unlike fortified wines, it is naturally sweet, with sugar coming entirely from the grapes. Harvest takes place in multiple passes through the vineyard, selecting only the ripest berries to build concentration while preserving freshness. Winemaking is carefully controlled to balance richness and acidity. Fermentation is stopped naturally to retain residual sugar, followed by ageing in a combination of French oak, Hungarian oak, and acacia barrels. This approach adds texture and complexity without overwhelming the wine’s natural aromatics.

What defines Vin de Constance is its balance between opulence and precision. It carries significant sweetness, but the structure and acidity keep it focused and composed, which is why it has maintained its reputation for centuries. Production is relatively small, and the wine is positioned at the fine wine level, often compared to top dessert wines from Sauternes or Tokaji, though stylistically distinct due to its varietal purity and historical identity. Overall, this is a flagship South African wine, combining heritage, craftsmanship, and a very specific sense of place - more than just a dessert wine, it is a continuation of one of the world’s oldest wine traditions.
