Released as a limited edition to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of Black Tot Day, this expression is designed as a modern interpretation of traditional Royal Navy rum. It takes its name from the Deptford Dockyard in London, historically used as a central blending and storage site for naval rum supplies. The blend combines aged molasses-based rums sourced from across the Caribbean, including Guyana, Trinidad, Barbados, and Jamaica. This multi-origin approach reflects historical naval practice, where rums from different colonies were blended to achieve a consistent and preferred style.
Distillation methods vary across the components, incorporating both column still and pot still distillates. Pot still rum, particularly from Guyana, contributes heavier congeners and a more robust profile, while column still elements provide structure and balance. The inclusion of high-ester rum increases aromatic intensity and depth. Maturation takes place in oak casks under tropical conditions before blending. The ageing process develops notes of vanilla, caramel, and spice, while oxidation introduces dried fruit and deeper complexity. The final blend is assembled to reflect a traditional navy style, where richness and weight are key characteristics.
Bottled at 54.5 percent alcohol, this is presented at navy strength, historically linked to the proof at which gunpowder would still ignite if soaked in the spirit. This higher strength preserves intensity and structure, giving the rum a more concentrated and powerful profile. Unlike softer Spanish-style rums, this expression leans toward a heavier, more traditional navy profile, with emphasis on molasses richness, spice, and depth. It is positioned as a collector-style release, with limited production and a focus on historical authenticity.
