Created in 1997, this expression was designed to sit between VSOP and XO in the Remy Martin range, offering greater depth than standard VSOP while remaining more accessible than older blends. It takes its name from the royal decree granted by King Louis XV in 1738, recognising the house’s quality and allowing vineyard expansion. The blend is classified as Fine Champagne Cognac, meaning it is composed exclusively of eaux-de-vie from Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne crus. Typically, the composition is weighted toward Grande Champagne, with an average age around 12 years, though individual components range from approximately 4 to 20 years.
Production begins with Ugni Blanc grapes, fermented into acidic, low alcohol wine suitable for distillation. Double distillation in traditional copper pot stills concentrates flavour while refining the spirit. A key stylistic element is the selection of eaux-de-vie aged in toasted French oak casks, which contributes a more pronounced oak influence than lighter Cognacs. Maturation plays a central role in shaping the profile. The use of toasted casks enhances extraction of compounds such as vanillin and toasted wood notes, while oxidation develops dried fruit and nutty characteristics. Compared to standard VSOP expressions, the result is richer, with more emphasis on oak integration and texture.
Blending involves a large number of eaux-de-vie, often exceeding two hundred individual components. This allows for a layered structure where fruit, oak, and spice are integrated rather than competing. The style is deliberately round and smooth, with a slightly heavier body than typical VSOP Cognac. The overall profile is positioned as a bridge between youthful freshness and mature complexity, with a clear focus on oak influence, richness, and balance.
