Description

Description:

Produced in Austria by Stroh Austria GmbH, this spirit represents a distinctive category known as Inlander rum. Unlike traditional rum, which is made from sugarcane derivatives, Inlander rum is produced from neutral alcohol derived from sugar beet, reflecting historical production methods in regions where sugarcane was not available. The origins of this style date back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, when domestic production of cane-based rum was impractical due to climate and trade limitations. Instead, producers developed a process using locally available raw materials, primarily sugar beet molasses or neutral spirit, combined with flavouring and maturation techniques to replicate the profile of rum.

The base spirit is highly rectified, produced through column distillation to achieve a clean and neutral foundation. This neutrality allows for precise flavour development through the addition of rum-like compounds and controlled ageing. Unlike traditional rum fermentation, where congeners are created naturally during fermentation and distillation, Inlander rum relies more heavily on formulation and post-distillation processes. Ageing takes place in oak casks, which contribute colour, vanilla notes, and structure. However, the role of the cask is often shorter or more controlled compared to Caribbean rum production. Additional flavouring components, including natural and nature-identical compounds, are used to build the characteristic profile, emphasising spice, caramel, and a pronounced aromatic intensity.

Stroh 40 is bottled at 40 percent alcohol by volume, making it a more accessible version of the brand’s higher strength expressions. It is commonly used in cooking, baking, and hot drinks, where its strong flavour profile can be retained even when diluted or heated. The resulting style is bold and highly aromatic, differing significantly from traditional rum in both production method and flavour structure. Rather than reflecting terroir or fermentation complexity, it is defined by its constructed profile and historical adaptation to regional constraints.
