Originating from Swartland, this wine is produced by Boekenhoutskloof, a leading estate known for its focus on Rhone-style blends and site expression. The Chocolate Block has become one of South Africa’s most recognised modern reds, combining varieties such as Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Viognier. Despite its name, the wine is not sweet, but instead reflects a rich and layered style built around structure and complexity, with fruit sourced from carefully selected vineyards across the region.
Each component is vinified separately, allowing for precise control over extraction and balance before blending. Maturation takes place in a combination of French oak formats, with an emphasis on integration rather than overt oak influence. The final blend is assembled to achieve both depth and approachability, resulting in a wine that balances New World generosity with a more restrained, European-inspired framework. Positioned in the premium category, it offers a distinctive and widely recognised expression of South African red winemaking.
