Description

Description:

Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Straight Rye Whiskey (2021 Release) is a flagship entry in the highly coveted Buffalo Trace Antique Collection of limited-edition American whiskeys. Distilled in spring 2015 and bottled in autumn 2021, this rye is released uncut and unfiltered straight from the barrel at 64.75% ABV (129.5 proof) - a bold, expressive profile that captures the robust intensity of long rye maturation. Aged for about six years and four months in new charred American oak barrels, this release reflects both traditional rye whiskey craftsmanship and the dramatic influence of extended wood contact

Rather than being a cocktail mixer, Thomas H. Handy is designed to be experienced slowly-its uncut strength and layered structure reward attention and patience, especially when explored neat or with just a few drops of water to open up hidden detail.

Tasting Notes
Appearance
Deep amber with rich mahogany hues and thick, deliberate legs that reflect its concentrated maturation.

Aroma
Robust and layered. Black pepper spice and toasted rye grain dominate initially, followed by molasses, caramelised brown sugar, and charred oak. Beneath the spice lie hints of dried cherry, tobacco leaf, and subtle vanilla bean.

Palate
Broad and commanding. Dense rye spice leads - black pepper, clove, and cinnamon - followed by rich caramel, dark fruit leather, and roasted coffee. Mid-palate reveals toasted oak, licorice root, and roasted pecan, with the proof adding warmth and textural depth without overwhelming the core flavours.

Finish
Long, warm, and intense, with lingering black pepper and baking spice, toasted oak, and a slow fade into dark sugar and charred wood tones. This rye leaves a lasting impression long after the sip ends.
