Pisco Aba is a grape-based spirit made in the South American pisco tradition, using Muscat (specifically Alexandria) grapes that are first fermented into wine and then distilled. Unlike grain or molasses spirits, its character is driven entirely by the aromatic qualities of the grape, placing it closer to an unaged brandy. Production is carried out in small copper pot stills, which helps retain delicate aromatic compounds from the grape. In this case, the use of Muscat grapes is significant, as they are naturally high in floral and fruity esters, giving the spirit a more expressive and perfumed profile.
Some versions of Aba undergo a short resting period in oak before being charcoal filtered back to clarity, a process that softens the texture while preserving a clean, transparent appearance. This combination of light maturation and filtration creates a style that is smoother and more rounded than completely unaged pisco, while still maintaining freshness. Compared to heavier spirits, the structure is lighter and more aromatic, with an emphasis on purity and grape expression. It is commonly used in classic serves like the Pisco Sour, but also works well neat, where its floral and fruit notes can be more clearly appreciated.
